Privacy Policy for Style Lens
Summary
Style Lens is a local webpage element and computed-CSS inspector. It reads element and style information only after the user clicks the extension and starts inspection on the active tab.
Style Lens has no account, external API, analytics, telemetry, advertising, cloud service, or publisher-operated server. It does not transmit page content, element information, CSS values, settings, or history records off the user's device.
Information processed on the device
While inspection mode is active, Style Lens may process locally:
- Pointer movement and clicks used to highlight and select an element.
- The selected element's tag, ID, class names, and limited DOM ancestry needed to generate a selector.
- The element's rendered dimensions.
- Browser-computed CSS properties, including typography, colors, backgrounds, spacing, borders, display, position, overflow, Flexbox, and Grid values.
- Search text entered into the inspector's local property filter.
- CSS or selector text the user explicitly chooses to copy to the system clipboard.
- The current tab URL only to identify protected browser pages where injection is not permitted. The URL is not stored.
This processing occurs only to highlight the selected element, display inspection results, filter the visible properties, copy requested text, and create the local recent-inspection record described below.
Style Lens does not intentionally read form values, passwords, authentication credentials, cookies, personal communications, or complete page text. It does not access Chrome's browsing-history database.
Information stored locally
Style Lens uses chrome.storage.local to save:
- Panel theme and property-group visibility preferences.
- Up to 20 recent inspection records.
Each recent record contains only:
- Generated selector and element label.
- Rendered dimensions.
- Timestamp.
- A limited style summary: font, foreground color, and background color.
Recent records do not contain the page URL, origin, title, full page text, form values, or account credentials. The oldest records are removed when the limit is exceeded. The user can clear all recent records from the popup.
Clipboard
Style Lens writes text to the system clipboard only after the user selects a Copy action. Clipboard text may include a selector, property value, CSS declaration, or the visible groups of computed CSS.
Data transmission, collection, sale, and sharing
Style Lens does not:
- Transmit processed or stored information to the publisher or third parties.
- Collect information on a publisher-controlled system.
- Sell, rent, license, or share user data.
- Use information for advertising, profiling, analytics, credit decisions, or model training.
- Load or execute remote code.
All inspection and storage occur locally in Chrome.
Permissions
activeTab
Provides temporary access to the current tab after the user invokes the extension. It does not grant persistent access to every website.
scripting
Injects only the packaged inspector.js and inspector.css files into the user-authorized active tab after the user starts inspection. Style Lens does not download or execute remote code.
storage
Stores local appearance preferences and the limited recent-inspection records described above. It is not used for cloud sync or transmission.
Style Lens requests no host permissions and has no background service worker.
Retention and deletion
The inspector's current in-memory result is removed when the page or tab closes or reloads. Recent inspection records are limited to 20 and remain until automatically aged out, cleared by the user, removed through Chrome's extension-data controls, or removed when the extension is uninstalled.
System clipboard contents are controlled by the operating system and can be replaced by copying other content.
Limited Use
Style Lens's use of information received from Chrome APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Changes to this policy
If a future release changes the information processed, permissions requested, storage behavior, or network behavior, this policy and the Chrome Web Store disclosures will be updated before publication.
